Mario Odyssey

Mario Odyssey it’s a beautiful game that dispenses the need for sleek 4K HDR images and Dolby Atmos. Instead, it is instantly recoverable and a demon to put back.

Is Mario Odyssey the best Mario game?

Is Mario Odyssey the best Mario game_

  • Odyssey is simply the best platformer we have played in many years. Moreover, it is one of the best entire point games.
  • It’s the most excellent Mario game since Super Mario Galaxy, to say the least, maybe even on par with Super Mario 64.
  • It shares a lot of DNA, and it’s the game to revitalize the Switch just in period for Christmas 2017.
  • It’s not that information to explain why Super Mario Odyssey is so good without giving away a great deal of its appeal.
  • It’s packed with secrets, collectables, innovation, and inventiveness, all of which you must savour for the first time without spoilers.
  • Except to say that every twist, jump, nook, and cranny is filled with dizzying excitement, and we’re sure you’ll be just as thrilled on the adventure as we are.

What is Cappy, Mario’s new hat?

What is Cappy, Mario's new hat_

We can say that the gameplay we feared the most on paper – Mario’s ability to transform into other characters effectively (both animate and inanimate) using Cappy.

His cap works so wonderfully that it is sure to be a mainstay in Mario games in the future.

Cappy is a sentient hat-wearing creature from an alternate realm that not only takes the place of Mario’s cap but can be used as a weapon to dispatch many enemies via a timely throw from the wrist.

You can also use Cappy to take many enemies and, in some cases, items to use his abilities to progress.

Throw Cappy on a Big Chain Chomp, and you can use him to knock down obstacles, even other Chain Chomps.

Launch it on a T-Rex, and you can blast the walls. You can even take over a Bullet Bill and fly to a platform that would otherwise be impossible to reach.

Discovering the different uses of Cappy is a big part of the fun, even during the numerous boss battles across the 15+ kingdoms.

And while it initially seemed like a gimmick, you soon realize that it’s the beginning that makes Odyssey so unique.

A platform game in the background:

  • Of course, Mario can still perform various miraculous jumps and limits, although there are no other power-ups beyond Cappy, so we feel the game is better focused as a result.
  • Creation comes in various puzzles and game types in each markedly different realm.
  • The Lake Kingdom, for example, is primarily underwater, so much of the action is focused on ensuring you reach your goals without drowning.
  • And the highly publicized Metro Kingdom, mimicking a real-world city (New York, cough), has tall buildings that add many verticalities to play with.
  • The exploration is rewarded, especially since you have to collect hidden Power Moons to move from one Kingdom to another.
  • Like the stars in previous games, Power Moons are rewarded for completing story missions or even smaller tasks, and you can’t progress until you’ve caught a set amount.
  • We found it relatively easy, but we lingered in each Kingdom longer to collect even more than necessary – such is the fun of each puzzle or quest.
  • We will even happily go back to the places to hook the wreckage now that we have completed the story. But, just like you, we have no doubts.

A classic story?

The story itself doesn’t take long to complete if you follow it, but in doing so, you’ll miss out on a lot of what makes Odyssey so unique.

Open-world realms aren’t designed to run headlong. Again, the metro Kingdom even gives you the option to stick around for one last delicious segment after you’ve got enough moons to escape. And if you like Donkey Kong, you will love it.

If you’re a collector like us, you’ll also love finding enough in-game coins to purchase the various outfits, hats, and bonuses at the stores on each level.

You resolve to notice that some of them are even requiring to enter specific locations to obtain elusive Power Moons.

It’s something that makes Super Mario Odyssey look cool and exciting compared to previous games. And ditching the overalls is liberating.

And that sums up Super Mario Odyssey superbly. It is a masterpiece in game design.

Classic sound and graphics:

  • We ignored the graphical fidelity, which maintains a resolution of 900p when docked, 720p in motion.
  • And I haven’t said anything about the excellent soundtrack so far. That’s because each of them soon became inconsequential to us as we played.
  • It could have been a group of bricks wandering around a two-tone background for what we care.
  • And the gameplay would still be that good.
  • Throughout the game, there are throwaway moments that you don’t realize are necessary. Until you reach a point where the skills you’ve learned are suddenly vital, even some realms later.
  • That’s the craft of a game design team at its finest. Their hand is never holding, but his skill is improving without even knowing it. It’s always ready for whatever is around the corner.
